We are now on our 2nd DVD player because the 1st one would just stop working and the only way to fix it was to unplug it from the wall. The 2nd one is now doing the same thing. The outlet plates throughout the condo (rental) are upside down which makes us wonder if the wiring is wrong...All suggestions are helpful.

When a plug is "upside down" that usually indicates one or both of the receptacles is controlled from a switch. Other than that, maybe you need to buy better DVD players Smiler

One thing to look at is the DVD(s) you are playing. See if they have finger prints or other dirt on them. A DVD will stall or skip if it can not follow its tracks. The better the DVD player the better the tracking, however if a smudge exists that the player can not interpret, it will stall. Clean with mild detergent from the center of the DVD to the outter edge with warm water. Dry with a soft lint free cloth. Must be totally dry prior to placing bck into the DVD player.
Good luck.

A quick, inexpensive way to check the wiring (your question) is with a basic three-light circuit tester. Available at any Home Depot, Lowes, etc for less than $5.

Just plug it in and look at the orange lights. Normally reverse polarity or open ground won't affect the operation of the DVD though. More detailed tests could be done by an electrician, but I'd hold off going there unless you have money to burn. Try temporarily running an extension cord from another circuit to the DVD or moving the player to another room to test.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! The only thing we haven't tried is the polarity tester and moving the dvd to another circuit to see if the problem still exists. Will give those a try and hopefully resolve the problem. Sure is a pain to have it freeze up in the middle of the climatic scene! lol

Hey Alex. We've tested the polarity, etc. and tried a different circuit. Neither of these things helped and we're still having the problem. I also know that it is not the DVD player itself as it has happened now on 2! Our Phillips did it so we bought a new one....same thing...Please post if you find out why this is happening and how we can fix it! I'll do the same. Thanks and good luck.
