We bought a new home 3 years ago - out in the country in N. TX. We have installed a whole house fan in our last 2 houses, and enjoy the energy savings by not turning on the air conditioner till we absolutely have to.
So- what is different? This time I installed the fan in my garage. I also installed a a screen door between the garage and the house.
Now - in the fall and spring, I can open the windows in our bedroom, open the door to the garage, and close the pocket screen door.
It pulls a cool breeze thru the house, and blows the hot air out of the attic. It is very quiet since the fan is in the garage.
In the summer, I can close the door to the garage, turn on the A/C, open a window in the garage, and turn on the attic fan.
The blows the heat out of the attic instead of it building up. If it is 95 degrees outside, I am replacing 140+degree heat in the attic with 95 degree air.
You need to make sure you have enough exhaust in your roof vents and soffit vents.
