I have a question about Whole House Filters. Background info is I have a house with a well and pressure tank and extremely rusty water. I use a water softener with rust preventative salt but it doesn't help enough as my toilet bowls get rusty brown in about 2 days.

1. Will these filters help with rusty water conditions.
2. Will the filter lower the water pressure, if so how much?
3. Will something else help like adding Rust-Out to my salt?
4. Will these filters help with the rotten egg smell?

I think you need an iron filter. The whole house filter won't help - been there, done that. A whole house filter will however make the rotten egg smell worse after just a few weeks.

My softner does filter out the iron I have, but it also recharges on a very frequent basis and hence uses a lot of salt. However, it does not get rid of the rotten egg smell. From what I have been able to research, an iron filter (one that is not potassium permangnet regenerated) should reduce the amount of iron and get rid of the rotten egg smell. I would do some research to see what your choices are. Biggest thing to do is to get an *independant* test of your water to see how much iron it has - one before and one after your softner probably wouldn't hurt.

I have not found someone who sells an air-based iron filter for less than $2000. Maybe I'm expecting too much.

Unfortunately, it seems that there are a zillion people willing to sell/install their system to filter your water, but a lot of them seem like snake oil to me.

What do you think of this?

A whole house iron and sulfide filter for $240. One concern I have is filter life. These filters are $120 each so if I end up changing them every 2-3 months it's gonna get expensive.

I have done a couple of houses in western north carolina that have a horrific iron problem with well water. One plumber finally told me to go back to the well drilling company. They can install a back flush filter. This can be set to clean itself at any interval necessary, every night or every week. The last one was $1400. This may be a big chunk up front but is better than dealing with the headaches of iron running through the system. My son's girlfriend lives in the area and you wouldn't know she was supposed to be a blonde, her hair is so orange colored from the water.

I do not know if a iron filter will help but, there is a tank (iron out) that will attach to your system that will eliminate most of the iron. Also, as far as the egg smell: Do you have an aireator tank along with the salt and pressure tanks? If not that will help. Hope this helps

Contact Care Free Products of Arkansas, 19796 Poverty Point, Rogers Arkansas 72756 1-800-392-8882. They have a zero maintenance system that took all my iron out of my well water. They have systems for smells also. I had the potperm systems that were a mess and not very affective. The renewable cartridge systems only work if you have a very slight iron problem. Good luck

we live in lincoln county nc and we have a well that is full if iron. we have 2 of the whole house water filters on the main water line under the house they cost about $50.00 each and the filters we purchase at walmart for 4.88 for 2. we usually change them every 8 weeks and it filters out most of the iron. this system has served us well. it's been on our house for 14 years. we checked out the bigger systems and they were to costly and they could'nt say if they could clean it any better. we have clear water and no smell. you still have to clean the bathroom toilets often, but i do that anyway. we are able to wash our hair and even our white clothes and not have them to turn orange. if you want more info on the type of filters they are just contact me and i will give you that info. if it haven't worked so well i would have a new well!

My home in Northern CA has 3 wells and a 1200 gallon holding tank that is purified using a Triple-O ozone system. Our water has a great deal of iron in it. Although I use a mechanical iron filter for my garden (which uses a separate holding tank), the ozone system on the house holding tank causes the iron in the water to become collodial which makes it much easier to filter out using a filter not unlike that which is used in aquariums. Depending upon how much water we use, I have to clean the iron filter about every 4-6 weeks. Cleaning means pulling the filter out of the tank and washing the collected iron off with a garden hose. Provided that you keep the filter clean, the filter element lasts for years. (My present filter was in the system when I bought the house 8 1/2 years ago, and the filter element is still going strong.)

The ozone system also produces clean water with none of the side effects of smell associated with clorine, and my hair and skin feel much nicer after a shower than when I lived in the city and used clorinated water. The ozone also gets rid of the rotten egg smell that's in the well water.

The Triple-O system costs about $1400 and the UV lamp in the system needs to be replaced every 12-18 months at a cost of about $180. Since one of my wells is contaminated with bacteria, I change my bulb every 12 months, and my water always tests clean at the house as a result.

If I remember correctly, Triple-O has an annual sale around this time of year each year, so if this sounds interesting to you, I encourage you to check it out right away.

My suggestion would be to contact the iaqa.org for a good water man. Many people from tons of (health related) fields are members there. You can access them from my web page too.

go to the mold remediation page.
