we just found out the gas company is going to increase drastically the price for people (thats me )that only use nat. gas for heat and i am trying to figure out an economical solution that works effectively when our central unit with gas pack goes out (it is currently a fine system but we went from a 70.00 bill to 145.00 and we just replaced the hot water heater three months ago and my stove works fine so i would like to 86 the nat gas. our house is a whopping 1,084 sq feet on a crawlspace, stick built thanks everyone we are originally from tx and air systems are different there

If you like the gas, you could probably change to propane(sometimes its just a matter of changing the guts in the furnace to propane). Then get a propane tank outside(I've never been charged a different rate before for just having one appliance). After that, go with oil.

A gas fireplace is usually for looks or a emergency heat source(since some can run without power). I would talk with your gas company about that or wait and maybe someone with more knowledge in that area can answer. But remember, if the heat can't get everywhere there is water then it isn't a good idea.
