I am a professonal with low voltage wiring both communications and data cabling, here in North Jersey I have problems with electrician doing the low voltage wiring usually wrong and then having problems collecting pay when I repair and redo the wiring from the home owner. How do I talk to the electrician to help them do it correctly.

NJ requires you to be licenced to do low voltage wires in a home. Stupid, but its the law.

So when wiring you must provide the electrical contractor with a wire diagram in which to work with. Do not expect them to understand how to wire communication and data cable and make any connections. AS you already know its a whole lot more difficult then house wiring.

Explain to them what you are expecting them to do. Put it in writing. Not just tell them. The poor guy in the field many times is not the person that pays the bills. If he or she will not sign off on what you provide them with, then get their boss to do it.

All of this should be done prior to the job starting. A meeting of the owner and the contractors that explains who is responsible for what is very important. Put the meeting on paper and get everyone to sign off on the meeting once agreements are made on who is doing what and is responsible for it working properly. Be sure to make them understand that if they take on the responsiblity of doing this part of the job that they will be the ones paying if the stuff does not work as expected.

As far as your collecting payment from them. Not going to happen unless you have a contract with them. You need to make the owner of the home understand that they are paying the bill for the repairs due to the electrical contractor goof up, and let them chase the contractor to get their money back.
