Every summer our electric bill goes up at least $300.00 a month. Even during the winter our Electric is $300 a month for a 2000 sq. foot house. We have had the electric company out here and many Air Conditioner repair people and no one can find a reason for it. Our house was built in 1966 and we have a 3 ton air conditioner. Any one have any ideas?

If I had to hazard a guess...
Being built in 1966 ther is probably no insulation in the exterior wall and not nearly enoug in the attic. If the windows are orgional then the probably leak like a sive. You might be able to find someone in Jacksonville that would thermal image your house for a modest price. This will tell you where you trouble areas exist.

Sometimes one can use a rough rule of thumb for air conditoning, which is 300 square feet per ton. For a 2000 square-foot house, that would be more like seven tons required, and that is assuming the insulation is up to modern standards. Even at 400 square feet per ton, five tons would be required.

It is possible that your system is vastly undersized and everything is running at maximum capacity all the time, and it is equally possible that all the problems described in the previous post exist also. Did anyone investigate the insulation in the house and do a calculation of the tonnage required? I think those two things would point you in the right direction.

Please take that a/c rule of thumb and throw it directly into the round file. It is useless and can never be used. I would suggest that the attic duct system be inspected for leakage. I personally would also check to see if the electric heat sequencer is stuck and bringing on the strip heat during a cooling cll from the thermostat. I suggest checking the Florida Solar web site for futher information.
