Having a problem with electrician installed, recessed lighting (can lights) in our ceiling. Several of the lights will go out for a while then pop back on. The electrician isn't sure why but suggests insulation in ceiling needs to be pulled back at the fixture location. No bulbs have blown out. Just off & on. Gary

I just finished a project using the same lighting. The fixture your using has an overload protection feature in it because the can comes into contact with insulation. The most likely problem is the bulb. The bulbs used must be designed for can use. In otherwords they will have a reflective coating on the end of the bulb you screw in.

Yep, both answers can be right. Absolutely make sure you are using the correct R type bulb (for Reflector) light bulbs, or PAR for the Halogen bulbs. They direct the heat out of the can better to avoid tripping the thermal over limit protection in the can. Another factor can be that cans were installed that are not IC rated (Insulation Contacting) and if they are covered by insulation, the same problem will occur. One of both of these should solve the problem.
