I want to install a series of recessed lights in my basement/family room. There is existing sheetrock on the ceiling so I will need to use the remodeling type light fixtures. There is no insulation in the ceiling and the clearance with sheetrock to the subfloor above is 7 1/4". I am still undecided whether to go with 6" or 5" cans but the height on either I believe is 7". My 2 questions are:
1. Is is ok if the cans touch the subfloor between the joists? and
2. If I want to put some sort of sound proofing insulation (what type would be best) and can the insulation touch the cans?

There are two types of recessed light ratings; IC and non IC. IC stands for "Insulation Contact". I would recommend using the proper can with your project. If it will be in contact with insulation use the IC rated can. I would not install if it will touch the subfloor above as the housing can get very hot. They do manufacture a "shallow" remodel can in 5" and 6" sizes. Check your local electrical supplier.

thanks PCBuilder. I agree, I do not want to install if the cans are goig to touch the subfloor. If I put IC cans and they touched would that be ok or only do it if I install the shallow cans?

I would only install a shallow can. Any direct contact between the can and framing should be avoided if possible...be safe! Additionally, since you have sheetrock existing and the distance between the sub-floor above is so close to the sheetrock ceiling below you would have some difficulty getting the taller can into the hole anyway. Shallow IC can is your best bet!

you are right. I will have to go for the shallow 6" cans. I think I have even seen shallow 5" ones as well. I rather be safe and have an easier go at installing with limited clearance. Thanks for your reply PCBuilder. I appreciate the help.
