We replaced a 60 watt flood bulb in our kitchen with a GE incandesent 60 watt flood bulb. Within 5 minutes it exploded. I am 55 years old and have had many homes (and light bulbs)and have never experienced this. I started searching the net to see if this was an anomaly and have found many postings about this. I will contact GE and the consumer product safety commission. This is a long existing fixture in a dry area. After reading other stories, I believe there is a defect involved.Scary to think of someone sleeping in a bedroom under an exploding bulb. YIKES!

Through a google search, I found the question "What would cause a light bulb to explode?" has been asked often, and to me, that's a real cause for concern! Here's my experience.
The other night I was in my bathroom, preparing for bed. My light bar has 6 globe-type bulbs. One bulb was burned out, and I hadn't gotten around to replacing it. It was THIS bulb, the burned-out one, which suddenly imploded/exploded or whatever....and the sound was like a shotgun. The shattered glass ended up all over the place, on the floor outside the bathroom, on the book I was reading, in the bathtub..EVERYwhere. I shutter to think how badly I could have been cut, or even lost an eye if a shard had headed right at me.
I am hoping someone can tell me what to look for to prevent this from ever happening again. Should I call an electrician? Change my light fixture? I have had a light-bar in the bathroom for over 20 years, and this has never happened before, but the fixture itself was recently changed and is just about a month old, which makes it suspect in my eyes. Right now I'm edgy about ALL the bulbs in my house. Can someone explain what might be going on?
Thanks so much,
jakmi

I too recently had this happen. The bulb (new & incandesent) that exploded was in a twelve year old fixture. I wrote the consumer product safety commission and GE (Bulb) Heard back from the CPSC but absolutely no response from GE. I urge you to contact the Consumer product safety commission so that this problem is noted and tracked. I am afraid of putting any bulbs above the bed now. It could have been so scary if I were lying under it. I am 55 and have never had this happen till recently.I think they are making defective bulbs. Good luck.

Hi mauigirl,
Thanks for the reply; guess I hadn't really thought about doing that, but have now, thanks to your suggestion, reported the incident to both CPSC & G. E.
It apparently is occuring more frequently, & could have devastating results, so reporting it is a wise thing to do. Thanks for the heads-up!
Regards,
jakmi
