Our central heat & a/c unit is about 10 years old. Never had any problems until now. The fan blows warm/hot for a period of time from mid-afternoon until 8 or 9 pm. Then it just blows cool air the rest of the night and the next morning.
The first morning we thought the heating element had gone out overnight. Hubby started checking diferent things out and by late that day it starting working again. However, it did the same thing that night and has continued to do so for 4 or 5 days now.
The temp has been moderate. Daytime 50's to 60's and nights in the 30's and 40's. Would love to have it fixed before it really turns cold and we just don't have the money right now for a service call.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and if it might be something we could fix ourselves?
Do you have a heat pump (A/C that can work in reverse to also heat the house) with electric back-up furnace or regular A/C with electric furnace? (A heat pump may be set up on legs about 12" off the ground)

Mark, thank you for replying. I guess our heat will be fixed by tomorrow. Our son is taking care of it for us. Thank goodness for good sons who look out for their parents!
