I am trying to find out why my dishwasher will not wash. It turns on, fills and the cycle begins. The water just sits there. I can hear the motor but the water is not being circulated. I have cleaned out all arms, the strainer and all the other pieces that the manual says to check. I tried to run it again after cleaning, but it is acting the same. Any and all advice will be very much appreciated (I really don't want to wash all those dishes in the sink!).

Does water pump out down the drain or just no circulation when washing? Same pump to drain or recirculate. If it won't do either it's probably the pump (the motor turns the pump so you could hear the motor, but it won't be moving water). I think about a hundred bucks for a new pump.

You didn't say what brand of dishwasher you've got, but I had similar trouble. I found that there were two check valves that had deteriorated. This allowed water to bypass around the plumbing in the base of the dishwasher and never really go where it was needed. Repair parts were about $25.00 and an hour of my time to install.

The dishwasher is a Fridgidare Gallery. The water will fill and drain out. It just won't circulate the water around. Thanks for your responses and if anyone else has additional ideas, please let me know.

Did you ever get an answer to your problem. I have a Maytag that has a similar problem. It appears to either be the relay or the motor. The pump runs to drain the tub, fills with water, then it hums for about 10 seconds and nothing happens( no water circulated). Any ideas???

Robin,
I haven't found an answer yet. It seems that it could be a number of different things that could be wrong, but which one? I may just have to break down and hire someone! If anyone has any other ideas, please share! Thanks!

Hi BJ,

Any luck w/your DW? I have the same issue w/my Amana ADB1200AWS. I've checked everything. The motor shaft is actually spinning, I've removed everything down to where the motor shaft pokes through the tub, it's spinning there, added the chopper, impeller, still spinning. Added the wash arm, not spinning! Is it possible that the motor is on the fritz and will only spin at half the speed?
