i`ve a 1750 sq ft home w/120k btu fha oil furnace in basement.wouldlike to add on a wood burning furnace from just outside the home on the ground floor level.the length to cover is less than 10` horizonal w/2 90`s maybe needed.
i can put the wb unit in its own metal shed on a pad w/chimney of its own.how would i tie it to the other system?wb also has its own fan.i`d rather not pipe h2o as w/ boiler.the oil/b has air "a" coil on opposite end of plneum.wb hot air inlet to tie in would be closest to the acess to the air filter and fan of the oil/f.think it could work?the price of oil is brutal!i`ve got the woodburner, chimney,& lots of
hv pipe.most of my investment would be time & labor,i`m capable mechanically.phil in ohio

Could you retype that? I can't read it without getting a headache. Don't abbreviate everything. Just talk normal english.

sure, can a wood burning furnace be added to a oil furnace system through the duct work given the distance of 10` when both have their own fan...and what would be needed?i have the parts i think i might need, but like to be clear on a plan.my chimney the oil burner exhausts to would not support the wood burner being added on,no lining.i like the idea of the separate metal shed with its own chimney, duct work etc.air intake is specificly the thing that i can`t see.would the system returns also have to be tied in?could it be drawn from another area?
the setup now has the oil furnace,a lennox OF23
series, rear flue, with both the air flows through the top of the unit.the large square duct, trunk?,with the warm/cooled air routes directly by the wall i mentioned.which is where i`d like to tie-in with the heated air from the wood burner.

For efficient air flow, (which is what you want if your goint to do all this work) you need properly sized supply air ducts, return air ducts, safe venting, combustion air supply and probably dampers to shut off any air flow to the furnace which is not being used at any particular time.

You already know, dont use the oil chimney to vent a solid fuel (wood) appliance, its not safe.

Your supply and return ducts probably change size, get smaller the farther away they are from the original furnace. If you hook on to the far end of the system, it may not be enough air to reach back to the other end of the house. Same with returns.

Also, consider one furnace blowing air toward the other furnace, if the furnaces are not isolated from each other the air from the one will just blow backwards through the other, screwing up the whole air flow system, decreasing efficiency.

You might just consider adding auxillary wood heat to one or two main rooms of the house, completely on it's own system, then you could just run the fan on the oil furnace to recirculate air throuhg the whole house.

thanks mark, that makes it all lot easier.the efficiency is top priority.hate to mess up oil system.adding the other as a independant system to a few rooms could very well do what i need.when running the fan to recirculate would spread to the entire house.the rooms to choose would be the most open & to common family areas.great to have such good advise.
