I have recently seen a kitchen with beautiful marble tile counters and was looking into doing it for mine. Presently there are old Formica ones (I tkink) but the laminate is coming off.
I was wondering, should I replace with plywood first or just remove the laminate and install them on the existing? If so, what prep should I do to allow them to bond properly? What would be the best to bond them with?
Also, a question about the marble tiles. I have experience with ceramic, stone and porclain tiles but not Marble. Can they be cut safely with my wetsaw? And can the edges be sanded and polished to look like the surface?

Replace with plywood. Use two layers-- a layer of 3/4" and a layer of 1/2" minimum, and then 1/4" cement board, as well as using strips of cement board for the edges if you're going to cap the edge with marble, as well. keep in mind that marble etches and scratches pretty easily, and sealer won't stop either of those from happening, and although it'll help with staining, it won't completely stop that, as well. So long as you're aware of that and don't mind the stone developing its own "patina", you should be good to go!
