Please offer suggestion on cabinetry to go with my knotty pine paneled walls and ceiling, medium honey tone. Also, any suggestions on what type of floor would go. All my choices look too busy because of the knotty pine pattern. All suggestions welcome!
I have knotty pine in my family room. I also have pine wainscotting in my kitchen that I painted an offwhite to match my cupboards. If the pine in your kitchen is sealed or stained, I might suggest looking at oak cabinets to compliment the pine - watch the color!! Depends on how many cabinets you have and if the pine is in the complete kitchen. For flooring, you might look at a light colored vinyl, solid or slightly verigated, no set pattern. I used a sheet vinyl of this type for a bath with oak cabinets and trim as we have one wall slightly off square - can't tell now!!

If you want a dark floor try a TerraCotta color, if you're looking to go light...try pearl gray. Use a charcoal grout with either of these choices. As far as the cabinets go; you're right the knotty pince is so busy and will be impossible to match exactly. I have to disagree that an oak will match it...the wood grains just don't work well with each other. My suggestion wood be this; Are we allowed to mention specific brands on here??? oh well, Medallion has a nice mid-range cabinet made of knotty alder in a hazelnut finish. The wood grain compliments but yet doesn't compete with the pine and the color matches the darker shades in the pine.
I also have an early to mid 1940's/1950's style ranch with knotty pine in a connecting kitchen and den. The house really needs new flooring. I absolutely love hard wood, but I know it will be "coffin-like" w/ wood everywhere. Another big problem is that the two rooms flow together, so there is no way to fix one w/o the other. I've decided to paint the knotty pine. Not with a bright, bold color, but something suttle & calming. (pale yellows, blues, greens, or cream/tan) I love color so I don't want white walls. (Although, white-washing is an option that is easier than repainting) I'm putting in hardwood floors, repainting the knotty walls, and also painting the cabinets in the kitchen. The walls are going to be a beautiful, yet mutted yellow & the cabinets white w/ new hardware. (as an interior design student i've looked at many options & i like these the best) I also believe a neutral & natural (ceramic, porcelian, travertine) tile w/ similar colored grout would be goregous in a knotty pine kitchen. And if you're not repainting then neutral (cream, ivory, white) carpet to soften & brighten the knotty pine elsewhere.
I have a knotty pine living room and dining room combo which attaches to my kitchen. For cabinets, I found painted cabinets in a soft vanilla or almond color looked nice with the knotty pine. A dark floor (I chose carbonized strand woven bamboo) enhances the beauty of the knots without adding to the busy look. Keep your hardware clean, maybe a traditional pewter without too much detail. Last, keep it well lit. That keeps the room from looking closed in and shows off your beautiful decorating work to its best advantage.
