I want to change the look of my existing cabinet doors. These are the original cabinets with slab doors. What is a quick and inexpensive way to do this? Any suggestions??
Painting is an option, though it can require considerable cleaning beforehand if you want the finish to be durable. Orange Clean works well on the grease and smoke that can accumulate. I did that in my mom's house, and it only took a couple of days worth of elbow grease and some updated handles.
In my current house, I replaced the doors entirely and only had to clean the stiles, runners, and drawer fronts before painting it all and updating the hardware. By measuring carefully, noting how the doors lap the openings, and ordering the new doors online, it was not terribly expensive, especially considering the cost of all new cabinets, some of which are absolute pressed-wood crap these days anyway.
I ordered my doors from http://www.cabinetdoorsdepot.com/ and was very pleased with the quality and customer service. Measuring is quite critical, as is understanding the types of hinges, how they work, and the way the door edges need to fit, flush mount or overlapping, as well as how much overlap.
I guess that's a long way of saying that if you have "normal" ouside hinges and order the doors to the exact size you currently have, cut out for the adjustable European type hinges, then they will not fit.
