Posted 19 September 2006 08:10 AM 19 September 2006 08:10 AM We're remodeling our kitchen and have blue board up over walls and ceiling. We plan on plastering over it all (skip trowel). However, we do plan on tiling (not sure ceramic/slate/glass or a combination) as a backsplash. Now, should we plaster everything so that cabinets and tile go over the plastering, especially if the cost of not plastering in those areas is minimal? Most importantly, is it better to plaster then put up the tile, or go ahead and put the tile directly on the blue board?
Yes, you can tile directly over the dry wall ( blue board ) but you should plaster the joints and at least give it 1 or 2 coats of primer ( paint ) other wise the dry wall will suck the moisture out of the tiling glue and your tiles might eventually start falling off.. Good luck..
Thanks for your response. However, we'd prefer to plaster everything, and worry about tiling later. If we plaster first, then prime the plaster, will that be okay as well?
We'd rather do it this way, so the plasterer isn't trying to stay within (or outside) specific lines all over the walls. Also, if we change our minds on where we want to tile, we don't have to worry about whether or not plaster is there.
