I want to install 4 big glass tiles ( 11" by 17" each) over an existing backsplash of 4" white ceramic tiles. I thought I would use 'mirror clips' drilled into the white tiles, and 'float' the deco glass tiles on them. This would leave a good 3/8th inch space between the glass tiles, as well as show the ceramic tiles through from the back. Other option would be to use thinset or something and install right over the ceramic tiles. What do you suggest?
removing the existing tile may be the better decision
You can tile over existing so long as tile is structurally sound (flat and no cracks) I would run a grinder over existing to scarcify tile and rough it up for better adhesion of new tile.
But for an area that small, why not do it right the first time and remove the tile.

The ceramic tile runs along the entire back wall of the kitchen, and I am just installing the Deco Glass tiles behind the kitchen stove. Besides, the ceramic tiles were put in before the stove was installed, so the positioning doesn't match. I have 28.5 tiles behind the stove....see my problem? The opacity of the Deco tiles is medium...there are some clear glass parts, but the design is made to go over a white base. It will look fine over the ceramic tiles, if I paint in the grout with white(if I 'float' the tiles on top). If I go with your suggestion and tile over...after scarcifying the ceramic tile, what adhesive would you recommend? Thinset or Mastik?
