The hardware stores have knobs of 2 sizes - 1 1/4 inches and 1 1/2 inches. Which is best to use on my cabinets in a small kitchen - 11.5 X 10. Also should I only use knobs or use knobs and pulls.

The smaller the knob the larger the cabinet or drawer front would look.
As far as using one type of knob or pull handle is strickly up to personal taste.
Personally I do not like knobs in a small kitchen as your clothes often get hooked on the edges of the handles. A smooth handle without any edges often work best in this type of kitchen. Larger kitchens often can get away with pull knobs as your not so inclined to be standing close to the drawer or door if someone needs to walk by you.
The combo of knobs and pulls often look nice, but again the same reason as above would be my concern.
