When the ceiling is continuous from kitchen, through dining room and into the living room, should the entire ceiling be painted flat or would it look weird to paint the kitchen area semi-gloss with a dividing line at some point switching to flat?

That depends, is there a natural "break" somewhere? For instance is the ceiling over the kitchen lower and then does it rise when entering another area? I personally like the idea of consistancy in an open room design.
