I currently have a 20 year old house in need of a total remodel. The living and master bedroom have vaulted ceilings. Is it possible to change these to flat ceilings when I remodel? I'd like to regulate temps, install can lights, and gain attic storage space.
The real answer is that you would be introducing another level and therefore another load on your structure. Someone must examine the entire structure and trace where the new loads would go, and verify that the existing structure can handle the additional loads. It may, or it may not be able to do that. If not, you'll have to modify the existing structure to handle the new loads.
Also, your new ceilings should be insulated to the level required by code for your region.
A good architect will be able to guide you. I suggest you consult one, so the project will be done correctly.

A good architect should be able to handle the structural aspects of what you plan to do. It's simple stuff, but it just takes someone who can visualize load paths and evaluate them, and design any additional structural work necessary. It's possible that none will be required, but better safe than sorry. You don't want cracked walls and sagging floors or ceilings.
