We have an ugly porcelin tile backsplash in our kitchen we would like to remove. We started chipping some of the tiles off and the drywall under it is not faing well in the process. Is it easier and a possiblity to actually just cut out the drywall with tiles in one (or large sections) piece rather than chip the tiles off one by one? Is this a multi stage process that we need to keep doing (1- remove tile 2-remove ruined drywall and 3 redrywall over it) or is there a potentially easier way to get these tiles and drywall off?

The simpliest way is to do just that, cut the drywall and tile out together and just redo the drywall. I was wondering is the tile attached directly to the drywall or is there hardie backerboard up?
