I was looking at my daughter's house and noticed that there are two ceilings in her living room. There is drywall at the very top with corner round at the perimeter then another layer of drywall with approximately 3/4" spacing between the layers. My question is why would there be two layers with spacing on the celing? Thank you

What creates the space between the layers?

first guess would be that the original ceiling was damaged or in poor shape and it was easier to re-rock over the older. This is common with older plaster ceilings if that is what she has.
