Different problem, different house. You all are giving me such good advice with my mold and mildew problems so I knew someone would help me with this problem.
We moved into this "fixer upper" house six years ago, it is about fifty years old but well built. The cabinet are great but are so dirty. Built up grease and grime, how do I clean them so that they can be painted?

Thank you again.

Fantastik spray cleaner and a damp srub sponge. Wipe with a clean paper towel.

Dried on cooking grease can be a real pain to get off. Most times it won't even sand off very well. Especially if it's been on a long time. Since you are refinishing the cabinets anyway, you might want to try some safety solvent degreaser or brake cleaner. You can get either from an automotive supply house. Just don't get it on anything you want to keep. Some of the stuff will attack plastics. Try it on a small out of the way spot first to make sure it doesn't dissolve more than the grease. Just stay away from flammable solvents inside the house and make sure you have ventilation if needed.

One paint job we did on cabinets was so difficult we wound up scrubbing the cabinets down with **** and span.**** and span will remove most of the old paint if it is latex.(Rinse and Dry them off really well before attempting to paint. Lightly sand the cabinets. Also you will need to prime them before painting so the paint will stick well.

For some reason the name of the product that does such a great job on removing grease and grime from cabinets so they can be painted was ommitted from my post. this product is **** and Span. Wash the cabinets after leaving the **** and span on them for about 3 minutes. Dry well. Prime and paint.

ha ha. The product name is likely S P I C and Span. The forum filters out "bad" words automatically and the first word of the product name is a derogatory term for an ethnic group.
