Have been in this new house for two years and where the wall meets the ceiling it looks like soot? like as if someone had been burning a candle? any ideas what is causing these marks?

It is called ghosting. It is caused by incomplete combustion of fuel burning appliances, candles, cigarettes etc. Here is an article on the subject. Ghosting

THANKS sPARKY617, I APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT. COME TO THINK OF IT WE DO BURN CANDLES AND USE THE FIREPLACE QUITE A BIT, SO THAT RIGHT THERE MAY BE THE PROBLEM.... HAVE A GOOD NIGHT!
