I need a railing on my basement stairway. Have had several people look at it, shake their head and say they will need to study it and have never returned even a call. Is it possible to do with this with PVC piping? I have divised a plan for it. Has anyone ever done this before with this material? I tried the lowes and home depot for stair railings, but the installation didn't seem that secure for the posts at the landings and they're special order blah, blah. There is no wall to attach the railing to, so I plan to drill holes in the stair risers. Good or no?
Would have to see the risers first, and see how big the holes woul be, and where they will be located. There are some proprietary systems that use PVC pipe for railings, so if they can do it, so can you. but it is connecting to the stairs that will be the big problem. Maybe they make 90-degree elbows with flanges that can be screwed to your stringers. One major issue is that the railing has to be able to withstand a 200-pound force...can you connect the PVC in such a way as to meet that requirement?
I don't see why a wood railing similar to the common deck railings that you see all over won't do the job.
