The best way to prevent drywall cracks is through correct framing. The use of kiln dried material that has been stored and handled properly is extremely inportant. Also how the span charts are implemented makes a difference. Some framers push to the very outer limits on their spans rather than going ahead and jumping up and hitting the lower end of the next span level. This creates more movement and the drywall cracks that accompany it.
