I was told that my ceramic tile floor can be covered with an engineered hardwood floor that snaps together like a laminate floor and can be installed on top of the existing ceramic floor and is a 'floating floor'. What does 'floating floor' mean ? I want to use a wood laminate over the ceramic tiles. Is this possible ? Thanks
A floating floor is one that is not fastened down, it just "floats" above whatever is underneath it. Laminates and some Engineered plank floors "snap" together and are not fastened down in any way. In fact they are usually installed over a thin sheet of foam.
These floors are easy to install yourself. You will need a small table saw to rip some of the planks, and a "chop saw" to cut them to length. (Sharp fine toothed blades of course.) Also an "installation kit" that contains spacers, a tapping block, and a special tool to pull the last strip into place. BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS REGARDING EXPANSION SPACE around the edges.
The biggest mistake DIY's make when laying these floors is not insuring that the end-joints are tight.
If your tile is flat a floating floor will work. BUT tile is usually used where there is moisture. An engineered wood system is subject to damage by moisture. "100% man-made" laminates are more moisture resistant.
