I have had a request to reuse the bright brass knobs and locksets on a house, but to refinish them in a more antique finish. They want somthing like a bronze color, but do not want to spring for new ones. Anyone know of something that can be sprayed or brushed on that will age or antique them at a reasonable price?
Door hardware including door hinge and door handle is very important for the quality of a door. They just like the bones for a person. So when to buy door hardware, you need to choose a door with the perfect hardware.
Only thing I know of theat MAY stay put is plating in the color of your clients' choice, but this is one of those "shady, grey" areas, where, without a warranty on the end result, and the cost of the process, they are at a cost flip for buying a new set, and that is without figuring in your time/% markup for running the old ones all over to deliver and pick-up when finished, etc. "Wants" vs. budgets are sometimes a nightmare the homeowner tries to circumvent with what they believe to be a cheaper way to get the same end result.

I agree with Maintenance 6, there is nothing really out there that you can spray that will adhere to a finish door hardware, so replating is really your only option which is expensive. Just have them buy new hardware.
Thanks for the info....I definitely want to 'salvage' them because they are original to the doors. Over the years, someone had painted them black (underneath several other layers of white, pink, green...), and I stripped that off too.
I don't believe mine have the 'tiger' finish that you described. I'll definitely try to find some of the rottenstone you were speaking of.
The doors also have different door knobs - one is a black ceramic, but the other is some sort of plain metal (that has rusted). Would you leave the metal door knob alone too?
Can you also tell me about the old house forum that you visit?
