I heard there's a formula for kitchen design, something like this; dark floors, dark counters, light cabinets or dark cabinets, light floors, light counters. Have you heard this? I have new construction. Pickd light beige with some dark redishsaltillo accents porcelain tile for floor, maple Thomasville Gibson Brierwood cabinetry (pretty dark stain), and, I'm wanting to use granite tiles for countertops. Would like the tan/beige tiles, but, it has alot of black. I did like the drama of that, but, need advice if its too clashy with such a light floor? Do you have a site or advice to give on that?

I personally like contrast and texture - sounds like you've got it. If you like the drama- go for it. Keep in mind that your wall color will also tie everything in. Pull the richest of the tan/biege colors from the tile and use those on the wall... or maybe a color from the floor tile. It'll feel cohesive... not clashy.

I have been designing kitchen and baths for almost twelve years and each one teaches me something new. If I have learned anything in the past decade of design it is...break the rules!!! If you like drama, go for it. A lighter floor, darker cabinets, lighter countertop is what we readily suggest for decorating safely. If you want to use a lighter floor, darker cabinet, and darker countertop, do it. Just remember, if you decide to do a medium to darker wall color, coordinate the floor with the ceiling so the floor don't get all the attention. The area that is most different, will stand out the most. If your floor and ceiling are similar, most likely people will notice the cabinets and countertops first. This is a good if that's what you want people to notice. Just remember, lighting is probably the most important feature most people overlook. Dark granite can make a room look larger and brighter with undercabinet lighting due to reflection of light. If you go darker, make sure you have a great lighting package planned.
One more thing, a beige type color on the walls will only make the walls look as if you have done nothing to them. I highly suggest getting personal with your wall color and painting a color that truly reflects your personality. After all, who's kitchen is it anyway!!??!!
