I have a fireplace in my living room that hase a rectangular stone (granite?) hearth. It has lifted up in the front corner about 1/2 inch. What can I do to get it flush with the wood floor?

There should be no movement what so ever at this point. This is an indication of one of a few things.
1. Framing that supports the hearth is undersized and its settling causing the hearth to move.
2. Framing was incorrectly done and is moving because of poor construction methods.
3. Termites. Quite often these little buggers are found in the framing surrounding a fireplace. As the space between the fireplace and the foundation is a good conduit for them to get into the wood structure without being detected. Once the termites destroy the framing surrounding the hearth area settlement occurs and the result is what could be occuring.

The stone will need to be removed and re-set to properly fix this. But first you must correct whatever moved and secure it properly before you go to the expense and hard work needed to re-set the stone. Otherwise you will end up doing it again. Also do not think you will be able to save this stone. As it is most likely secured quite tightly with cement in other areas and will break when removal takes place.
You could get lucky however if you find that adding support jacks below where the framing has settled may let the stone reset itself if your carefull when lifting it back up to where it was when it was built. Be sure to dig the floor and install footings below to support the posts before you begin to lift the framing.

Thanks for the information. I guess there are no easy solutions for this problem... Since there is a basement below it (with an acoustical tile ceiling), I'm hoping this will make this issue easier to resolve.
