My home was built around 1968, with paneling installed in the family room. Since the room is very dark and on the north side, I removed it only to find the builders had used an adhesive on stud lines that has turned extremely brittle and black. My question is how do I either remove the adhesive that is not flat and by what should I use to completely cover this stuff so it won't bleed through the new paint?

Be careful! With that age you could be dealing with an asbestos removel issue with the adhesive, as well.
