Hello all, I'm turning to the net for help. I'm going out of my mind trying to get what I'm looking for, but I have no idea what I'm looking for
Ok, I'm at the painting stage of my basement remodel. I have chosen a blue color for the walls, with a grey stripe running horizontally. I have four columns (covering the lally columns and a beam which originally I painted white, I didn't like it. I then painted it the color of the stripe, I didn't like it. I then painted it white. I didn't like it. Yes, I'm a mess.
Anyway, I am lost. I can't put my finger on it but there is just something off with the scheme. The only thing I haven't tried is painting it the color of the walls (blue). I was tring so hard to make them stand out but maybe that is the problem, they are too "in your face".
I think you nailed it! The beam and posts, I think, should be "matter-of-fact", and not have attention drawn to them, and painting them the wall color will do just that. I would run the stripe in line with the wall stripe, wrapping around the posts, too...but that's optional.

Well, that did it!!! I painted the columns and it was an incredible difference. So happy with it.
However, I have an angled wall that meets the blue wall just before the column which is painted brown. Does brown and blue match well? lol...sadly, I'm serious. I'm color-disabled (not blind...just a version of tone deaf )
Edit: After finishing the blue, I now hate the brown...uggghhhh. This is so frustrating. Maybe it will look good with wall decorations and such. The corner at the column and brown wall will be finished shelving so it may help break it up. I have no idea.
We had tons of them on a new subdivision. Painter used latex primer and latex finish. All failed the next year. I did some research and found for fiberglass there is a special primer, like they use on boats. I'm no painter, was assit. super on that job. All those posts were stripped, primed with the new primer - sorry I don't remember the brand, and re-painted.
