I just exposed two sides of my concrete block foundation down to the footing in order to repair and waterproof, based mostly on the information here... (thanks to all, esp. LicensedWaterproofer)
The one question I cant find an answer to is how to get the old tar/fabric stuff off of the foundation in a reasonable amount of time. Is there a preferred method to scrape and clean concrete block?
I might as well ask about my other concerns at the same time... its coldish here now, expected highs are going to be near 40 or less probably until spring. Are there any concerns with using the alco or dewitt asphalt stuff in cold weather, and can I use hydraulic cement in cold weather? Are there other products (aqua seal makes something that is supposedly designed for cold weather application) that work okay? Has anyone used aquaseal and seen if it worked well yet?
thanks again for this board and all the info here!
Use a pressure washer, 3000 psi minimum. You can rent one. I have no problems usung hydro in the winter. You should consider a waterproofing seal, like tremproof 250 gl, an elastomeric, as opposed to a damproofer like tar. good luck
The pressure washer works great... makes a whole lot of mud though!
Thanks for the tip with the tremproof stuff. I am looking into a few different products, but so far I like the idea of the grey stuff from aqua seal... you can seal up the foundation to the clapboards because it doenst look like crap, which makes more sense to me than ending the waterproofing below ground... if that stuff is too thin, a layer of thick tarry stuff like the stuff LW recommends on this board may have to go over the top of that as high as I can go...
The bottom line: I am going to use overkill because I dont want to do this twice!
