Hello Everyone,

I'm back from surgery and finally able to do some light work. On my last post, I was closing the bulkhead entrance to my basement and relocating it, but I have a few questions about the new bulkhead entrance.
My basement walls are field stone with red brick on the last 3' to 4'. I already put some jacks by the section of wall I plan to remove to make the entrance, but don't know if I should make the bulkhead out of cinder blocks or make forms and do a cement pour. Either way my concern is how to marry either to the existing field stone.
I thought about doing cinder blocks and getting them as close to the filed stone as possible. Then make a form to cover the gap and do a cement pour to marry both. Is this doable?

thanks

Paul

That's probably as good as you can do, but just make sure you make that gap big enough so that you can pour the full depth...I'd say 3 or 4 inches is about minimum. That way you can use a rod to get all the concrete settled in the bottom. Any smaller and you run the risk of leaving voids.
