We are in a new construction home and are going to install a paver patio. We have a sliding door to the back yard. There is a cement stoop on one side (approx 3' x 3'). We want to remove this stoop and replace with a 6 ft wide step that will match the paver patio.

The problem is that the stoop was poured over a "wing wall" that is adjacent to the foundation. How can we begin to remove this?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks,
jen

Not entirely clear what the picture is...there wouldn't be two wing walls, would there be? If there are, do you want to remove the wing walls or use them to support your new platform? If you just need to remove the platform, a combination of a concrete saw and sledge hammer will probably be required, along with a metal-cutting sawzall to cut through wire reinforcing mesh or steel reinforcing bars.

Basically there is one wing wall that is connected to the foundation...(like a triangle shape). The builder told us the concrete was "sitting on top" of it. However, after some minor excavation and viewing pictures of the construction phase, it looks like the concrete stoop was poured over this wing wall--bonding the two--so if you have a twinkie, the filling would be the wing wall--right in the middle. We have a sledge hammer, etc, but are scared we will damage the foundation since its all one piece. ugh.

When you say poured "over" the wing wall, do you mean all around it? Can you see the end of the wing wall now? Or is it completely encased in your concrete?

When the stoop is removed, what will support your new platform? It seems to me that you must remove the wing wall also, and make the new platform completely independent of your foundation. You may have to extend the foundation of your new platform down to the house footing depth, to find undisturbed soil and to prevent lateral loads on the center of your house foundation wall from the platform footings.

The cement was poured over the wing wall--like gravy over mashed potatoes. Its encased, all one, melded together.

When the stoop is removed, we are preparing the ground with gravel, sand, etc--its going to be a paver patio. However, we need to get the stoop out first and that is what I dont know how to do.

Use a concrete saw to cut along your main foundation wall on the wing wall, and then also to cut the stoop itslef into manageable pieces, and then sledge-hammer away until it's all gone.
