I am planning on adding an addition on the back of my house and was wondering if when I lay the foundation if I need to attach it to the original foundation of the house?

If you are going to attach the addition to your home, you should make sure you have the same type of foundation on well compacted soil and the concrete foundations are doweled together.

they should also be at the same depth.
