I am hoping someone can help me out. I recently purchased a home that is in the midst of a extension. I am about to poor the concrete on Monday but want to confirm the weeping tile is working correctly. It has been raining for about 3 days here in Toronto and there is no water going into the sump pit. Could this mean the weeping tile is not working correctly? Is there a way of testing this?
There should also be "weeping tile" OUTSIDE the foundation, at footing level. Be certain that is installed, and installed correctly, before they backfill, and be certain the foundation walls are at least properly dampproofed with a very HEAVY coating (not one thin spray coat), or pereferably, waterproofed, and be sure they backfill with crushed stone or pea gravel. The builder will probably scream at this request, but it's a matter of do it now, cheaply, or possibly do it later, more expensively. To be fair to the builder, he is probably entitled to extra money for this work, and it will be well worth the money to you.
Weeping tiles inside allow water to penetrate the foundation walls, and that is the one thing you do not want to happen. The inside tiles are simply a second line of defense. The real defense is outside, which is where you want the water to stay.
