Is it a bad idea to use concrete fasteners to screw into a concrete wall? My concrete wall is part of my house's foundation in the basement garage. I would like to attach some shelving to the wall. Freestanding shelving (unless I custom build it) will not fit my needs as I need shelves of varying heights to hold all our tools/junk. I always thought attaching things directly to the concrete foundation was a no no as it was making holes in the concrete that could lead to cracks and problems later on. However, the home improvement stores sell the closet maid shelving with concrete fasteners and it is tempting. So, would it be a mistake?
Assuming that it's not an abmormally thin concrete wall, then I don't hesitate to drill into a concrete wall for fasteners, especially for something as small as shelving, just don't drill them much deeper than they need to be and you should be fine. If problems arise from a little hole drilled in the concrete, chances are there are some underlying issues that would have surfaced anyway.
