It seemed as though the previous owners built a 4'x8' floor on top of the basement floor in order to install a bathroom & laundry room. To my surprise that wasn't the case when I started to remove it (I wanted to level the floor). There was nothing but dirt and rocks… no concrete floor underneath it. I think it was part of the original basement floor.
Would I create any structural problems if I continue with leveling the floor? The area that I want to level is in the corner of the basement. The total size of the basement is approximately 15’x20’ (guestimation). The house was built in the 1920's and is three stories. Is it necessary to seek the advice of a structural engineer?
I thought this was going to be a ‘simple’ project. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
No problem, just make sure there's a vapor retarder under your new concrete, and pour away. The floor slab is not structural, but if you place 66-1010 welded wire mesh in your concrete, it will help control cracking. Get the sides of the existing slab as clean as possible so the new concrete will bond to it.
