I need a reliable formula to calculate square footage when doing interior painting. Suppose I am calculating sq ' for an entire new home, including ceilings, walls, window frames, closet doors, etc. How do I explain to home owner how I figured sq '? Help!

Hey - you have another thread too :-) Why calculate square footage if you are quoting painting? I never do and homeowners never ask. Calculate how much time it will take to paint it. Calculate how much paint it will take to paint it. Base the quote off of cost of labor, cost of materials, what your company needs to make (we use a per day rate for the company) then give the total to the homeowner. If you aren't sure how much time it will take - look at other projects and the time it took for those and/or bring your top painter with you to help you figure the time. Remember things like - a 6 panel door takes longer than a flat door, guillotine wood windows take longer than aluminum (which aren't painted), does anything need priming? are there crazy high ceilings are funky stairwells that will require alot of ladder work? These things are all part of the quote. Again if you are unsure take one of your painters with you to help figure it all. We use a three page quote sheet and write our estimated labor cost, materials, and company money on THE LAST SHEET which is ours, and then write the total on the top sheet (carbons thru to others). That's how we do it. Square footage is only important when calculating paint needed and pretty quickly you should be able to estimate that by eye. Track all of your jobs so that you have references.

Good luck and let me know if you have more questions!

There is no "formula". It is simply length times width, or height times width, depending whether it's floor area or wall area. For wall area, depending on why the figure is needed, generally one doesn't deduct window and door areas from the gross areas.

For floor area, there is gross floor area and net floor area. Gross floor area is the total area inside the outside surfaces of the walls. Net floor area is the total of all the areas of all rooms and spaces.

calculations overflow/underflow

Does anyone know what formcalc scripting would be necessary to get rid of the arithmetic overflow/underflow error?

I know that some of my calculations are dependent upon other variables that require value input before anything is set with the others.

I've read a suggestion to 'surround the calculation with a check to ensure that the variables are non-zero, non-null.'

But I'm not sure how to go about this...I'm new at this, so an example would be really helpful! Thanks~
