Can I just put another heavy coat of stain on and let it soak in to darken

AS long as you have not coated the surface with a sealer of any kind re-staining can be done. Perhaps with darker stain. Be sure to mix the stain you have now real well as oftentimes the stuff that makes the stain darker is in the form of a thick goo on the bottom of the can.
Be sure to leave it on the wood longer before wiping off. The harder the wood is the longer it takes to darken.
