What coating can I put on the shelf of a laundry room cabinet that holds laundry detergent, bleach, etc.? The wood is being damaged by the large soap dispenser that drips on the shelf when I push it open to dispense soap into the cup, wash out the cup, then replace it over the dispense faucet. Plastic slips around, wooden box sides don't allow for dispensing of soap.

Maybe glue a piece of fiberglass-reinforced plastic panel to the shelf. It's the stuff that's used on the walls of commercial kitchens. It's durable. The most recognized brand name for such panels is Marlite.

Thank you for the prompt reply. Wouldn't that just move the problem up a couple of inches? Instead of it peeling from the current area, it will peel up a little further where the wall paper starts and the panel stops?

Well, no, I couldn't tell that, but I can tell you that there have been many really dumb questions submitted by male junior citizens. Your question was quite reasonable.

Is there room under the spout for a plastic soap dish that could hold a sponge to catch the drips? The water would mostly evaporate between wash loads and you could just throw the sponge in the washer every month or so to clean out the soap.
The laundry cabinet shelf is devoted to laundry supplies. When I move the soap dispenser (TIDE)toward me, I take the cap off, fill it and spill the soap into washer. Then I wash out the cap and put it back on the dispenser and push it back securely onto the shelf. During that process, it seems the wet and soap still drip onto the shelf. A neighbor suggested a tray with low sides. Unfortunately, I have to lift up that big container over the side in order to get the soap to pour out. Yes, I could clean the whole area after each use, but this senior doesn't have the patience for that process!

As we mature, we get Less patient with nonsense irritations. Customer No-Service is an irritation--we all deserve better than that! I tried an old baking pan with a low lip around the sides. But....I couldn't get the measuring cup under the spout unless I lifted it up and over the lip. That means spilling on the wooden shelf again! Plastic trash bag under the detergent bottle was a problem in that the bag kept slipping, exposing the wood again. Shelf paper did the same thing. Smaller bottles are easier to lift, but must be lifted out to pour the soap. Oh my, oh my.

I've had good luck with the peel and stick contact paper. They make a heavy duty clear plastic that sticks well. You'd have to make sure all the soap was cleaned off though.
