I've ordered a new granite counter top that needs supports added at bar over hang. The installer said the max overhang is 12" without supports, but mine is 14". He said you could buy "corbels" off the shelf?? The cabinets are cherry and I want something that fits in. Any suggestions?

You can order corbels from most cabinet manufacturers already stained to match your cabinets if you have time to wait to order them. You can purchase them off the shelf however most retailers do not sell them off the shelf in cherry wood. This would be a problem since stain takes differently to each wood type and might not look right. You may want to check for a local millwork company who will make them inexpensively out of cherry wood and you can get a better stain match on them then another type of wood. Just expect that even after stain matching and using cherry wood, the finish will still be slightly different then your cabinetry. It very difficult to match 100 percent but is still accpetable. Another option is to contact an Enkeboll dealer near you. Visit the Enkeboll designs website for ideas and dealer info. You may be able to order them directly on line. Good Luck
Christy.

I know this is a year late but I have soapstone which is even heavier than granite overhanging a fppt with no corbels. I had the plywood top notched out every 18 inches and steel bars inlayed into the wood for support. It works great. I have pictures posted at http://www.flyingbuffalo.net/remodel

Thanks for the input. I ended up contacting the carpenter that built my cabinets. He made 4 supports from the same material & finish that worked very well.

The web site has grown quite a bit and is now at CraftsmanRemodel.com. For pictures of the soapstone counter overhang go to the Craftsman Home Remodel FAQ section.
