We're building a CrossTimbers composite deck and we're trying to figure out how to build the stairs. The small deck has only 2x6 joists with a beam set back from the edge. So we're not sure how to securely attach a backer board for the stringers. We'd like to use notched stringers on the ends too so the treated lumber could be easily covered by a couple pieces of fascia. However, if we can't get a secure connection for the backer board, perhaps we need to use 2x12 unnotched stringers? Is there a way to cover the 2x12 with CrossTimbers?
We also aren't sure what concrete to pour. We're leaning toward a pier down to frost line under the bottom of each end stringer. Do the middle stringers also need a concrete pad? If yes, should it be integrated with the piers somehow? Thank you so much for any advice you can give!
