I am a home builder and I don't know about you, but I freekin' HATE the innocuous color known as "builder Beige."
Yeah, call me a victim of too many hours of HGTV, but I've noticed that most people don't chose that color IF given a choice.
I build spec houses and I build custom homes and I've pledged to have color-color-color in both.
I think people have been trained over the last 15 years to accept 'builder beige'... no... to EXPECT it... in new homes, almost to the point that if they don't see it, they think the house is funky (and I don't mean it in a good way).
Thank you HGTV for helping me see the light...errr... should I say... the COLOR!
Remember folks... it's just paint. It can always be easily painted over if it gets dated (unlike floral wallpaper).
Here's an example of one of my homes:
I am currently framing a spec house which will have that cool blue and chocolate brown color combo that's popular on HGTV now.
It is funny that this should come up. As a painitng contractor I have found a large market in residential repaints from these designer colors to off whites with bright white trim. My biggest category of customers are realtors trying to sell a house. Their experience is that these color combinations put off enough potential buyers that the expense of a repaint is warranted. My suppliers have been asking why I have bought severl hundred gallons of bone white over the past three months as a result. My personal home uses these dramatic color combinations, but these color palletes are definately a risk on spec homes.

The LAST person I'd ever consult on a color scheme is a realtor. I can't for the life of me understand why some clients will allow them to pick colors for them. It seems that some clients think a realtor's license makes them a decor expert when there is nothing further than the truth.
I'll bet ya most of the bland homes a realtor sells is repainted with some actual color within 2 years.

Boutique Home Builder, I know this may not be the place for this, but I could not find a way to contact you by e-mail. You sound like our kind of builder. If you get a chance, please look at our website http://www.portstone.com. If you see something you like you can contact me by e-mail from the web site.
I have a handful of builders that ive worked with for years. They build spec houses and sell them very quickly with my recommendations for using color. I specialize in color therapy and kitchen & bath design. Color has its own vibrational energy that can effect us on a deep level. When you use a color other than that "builder beige" you are setting yourself apart from the others. Shoppers will remember your home and know that they dont have to settle for the same ol thing. Color will give your home energy and life and will draw more potential buyers. Christy

It still amazes me how people are terrified of even the smallest bit of color that is outside the beige line yet, they dress colorfully and drive colorful cars.
It's just PAINT people! Sheesh....

The "b" word is not even in my vocabulary! I get at several people a year who say, "I want something in a light beige, something hardly there". snooze............. What the heck is the point?!
You sound like you probably spend a lot of time like I do, educating people on the wonders of using color.
