I am looking for some info. I currently have no experience, but am in the planning stages of building my own home. I plan on doing a Post and Beam design - but am curious how this will work with a basement. My plan is for a strawbale infill. So what I would like to do is build a Post and Beam structure with a basement, and strawbale infill. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

The best advice I can give is to work with a competent architect, who will advise you on the details of your house.

Basically, you will either need transfer beams at the basement ceiling level, or columns or tall piers beneath each post above. It's all very easy to design when all the facts are knowm, but impossible to say anything more based upon what you have told us.

Thanks for the reply. I guess my main question was how does Post and Beam work with a basement? Would the Posts be able to be supported by the basement walls? Most Post and Beam structures that I have seen have been Slab on Grade - I know that a basement is possible, but just unsure how to design.

Also - I am using an architect for the design. I am at the interview stage - and am interviewing my first architect next week. Just trying to educate myself as much as possible. Thanks for any replies.

Depending on the post loads, the walls may be able to take the load of the posts, or the walls may have to have concrete pilasters built in, and post footings provided, besides the regular wall footing.
