Hello all,

I'm going to be having my first brand new house built next spring and I have a question. What is the ideal size for a 2 car attached garage? I've found a plan I like but the garage size is only 19-4" X 21'-8". I plan on enlarging the plan by 2' which would make the garage 21'-4" X 21'-8". Is this going to be a comfortable size? I will want to park an extended Minivan in one side and either an SUV or 1/2 ton pickup in the other side. I would like to have some room at the front for cupboards and workspace if possible. Please advise.

Bigger is better! If your a tool hound like a lot of us, you never have enough room to work or store things. If you have children their toy cars and play stuff alone will fill the garage.
Go as big as you can that will not make the house look out of balance.

Would the 21'-4" X 21'9" size feel cramped with 2 vehicles or would they fit just fine? When looking for prepackaged garage plans it looks like 24' X 24' is about the largest that is commonly sold.

Garages are never large enough. 24x24 is really not that large.

You can add quite a few feet of width to a garage witout any problem. All you usually have to do is change the dimension on your canned plan when you go for a permit.

If you change the truss span or door opening size, you will end up with different trusses and/or headers over the doors and a different structure.

Let the permit people help you since you are paying them for a plan review. - If you are in Saskatchewan, you may need different siding for the hockey pucks or a bigger beam inside for the fish and shooting trophies.
