I have searched everywhere for a solution with no luck. I am in the process of finishing a basement. The lowest mechanical piece is set @ 93.5" Wink. The bottom of the floor joists are @ 101" rather than box in the mechanicals I wanted to just have a straight ceiling across the entire room (open floor plan) but with the bottom of the joists so high will I need to build down from the joists with 2X2's to get adequate nailers/support for the celing (drywall) ?

You could install a suspended gypsum board ceiling...there are suspension grids which are made to accept drywall screws or maybe self-drilling self-tapping screws. It would be easier to level such a grid than to suspend 2x2's and also lighter and faster to put in place.
