I recently purchased a forecloser which was built some time in the 1920s.It has a foundation in the middle of the homeabout three quarters across cellar. Then the next 6 feet is a 8x8 beam that rest on another section of foundation on the other end which is about 4 feet to the border foundation of the home. There is about 12 feet of this beam i need to replace 6 of which has no foundation under it so that you can walk into next room. Now keep in mind some floor joises are attached to this beam about 24 inches on center.(Both sides)of beam. How can I cut this out and jack up beam so house dont fall on me and replace it.I was told this can be done if I jack on both outer sides of beam. But i will have to cut the end of the floor joices off the beam.some advice would be great on this project.
What you do is build temporary stud walls three feet either side of the beam...just studs, wallboard isn't necessary...they will support the joists on each side while you remove and replace the beam. When the new beam is in place, remove the temporary walls. Jacking isn't really necessary, just build the walls to fit tightly under the joists.
