I am building a patio roof that extends from a house and replaces an overhand structure over the patio. The previous structure rested on 4x6 posts. I was intended to remove the two posts closest to the house, put up a ledger board, and run rafters from the ledger (pitch of about 3x12) down to the 2x8 that currently spans the two outside 2x8s.

My concern is that the patio roof will be tied to the house only by the rafters. I do not know if this is to code. Another options are to keep the inside posts, build up a cripple wall and run the roof from that to the outside posts, thus having the roof free standing and not tied to the house.

The more involved option is to thoroughly tie the structure to the house with a double-ledger and joists across, and then a ledger at the top for the rafters. The NC code only says a patio roof can be attached to the house or free standing. Any suggestions? Loren

What does your architect say about those issues?

I am not actually using an architect, but I have settled the issue. I found the code requirements for a patio roof, which allow the roof to be tied to the house by the rafters only, or to be free standing. I have decided, however, to tie the structure to the house with horizontal joists bolted to a ledger board bolted to the house.

Thanks for the consideration.
